1 Notice to all Kazaa users and to those who love sharing music!
Rating: PG
Quality: (Quality: Unrated)
Hey Everyone,
You may or may not have heard but if you're a user of Kazaa or regularly download music off the net, listen up As a wired news article states """The music trade group has sent out 871 subpoenas so far, according to the Associated Press. Officials from the RIAA said they would begin filing lawsuits against alleged file traders at the end of August. " In the meantime, the recording industry announced it would aggressively pursue lawsuits against file traders who offer a substantial amount of music files to others on peer-to-peer networks. ""

This isn't a joke.
I figure the best revenge tactic we have against these money hungry record companies is to organise a strike somehow on buying cds for say two weeks or something.... say a few universities get involved, or a few colleges around the states and we demand that they lower the cost price of CDs? Either way or demand that we won't buy their music if they continue with the lawsuits, it's so unfair to our fellow cd-burning mp3-downloading peers Imagine being our age and having to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars just because you were trying to avoid the consumerism and crap involved in the music industry.

""Or, to freak everyone out, the RIAA could choose to sue a smaller offender.
In April, the Michigan Technological University junior was sued by the RIAA for running a so-called "Napster-like" network on campus that enabled his fellow students to share music files.
The RIAA sought to recover 150,000 for each file that was downloaded, but settled with Nievelt earlier this month for a total of 15,000. After the initial payment in June, Nievelt will pay an additional 3,333 each year for the next three years to pay off the settlement.
As a result of these court decisions, will the RIAA target individual file traders rather than the technology they use?
The RIAA has no choice but to go after individuals, said one lawyer.
"They are going to have to sue users and instill fear in the users," said Scott Hervey, a Sacramento attorney and chair of the cyberspace law committee of the California State Bar.
Historically, the music industry's strategy focused on litigation designed to shut down file-swap services like MP3.com and Napster, Hervey said. But open peer-to-peer networks like Grokster, Kazaa and Morpheus operate without a centralized server, and "there's no way to shut (them) down."
"They are engaging in a war against the users right now," Hervey said.
This week, the RIAA began an "education" initiative by sending hundreds of thousands of instant messages to file traders on Grokster and Kazaa warning them that downloading copyright files is criminal and they could be easily identified and prosecuted.
The group also recently slapped four students with lawsuits, accusing them of running Napster-like services on their internal college networks. In recent months, the music trade group also sent letters to universities and large corporations alerting them to potential copyright abuse on their networks. ""
