1 A few things about my city - Derby, England, UK

OK. I am british but did you know anything about any other cities apart from London? Living in Derby all my life here is what I have learned from it...

Its a city in the central part of england, in the region called the East Midlands. It is the only city in the county of Derbyshire, the city being home to a football team called Derby County FC (football is the brit word for soccer). Our county is home to the peak district (40 miles away from Derby) and the town of Buxton that is famous for the spring water. We have china called Crown Derby, beautiful hand crafted pottery. Derby has some interesting sights such as our Cathedral which is the hundreds of years old All Saints Church. The river Derwent which you can walk along the banks in our hot summers (yes 2003 has been the hottest summer here for a while). There's Markeaton park which is a very popular city park the greenest part of the city. There are rumours that our city is one of the most HAUNTED places in the UK. We go shopping in the Eagle Centre which is a very tiny mall. We are an industrial city home lots of factories. One business in particular which make Plane engines called Rolls Royce (which used to make those cars). We are said to have a strange accent but every suburb in Derby speaks different.

The schooling here is quite different too. First are primary schools from 4-11 and secondary from 11 to 16. You do the most important part of education 14-16 GCSE. Then you are free to do whatever you want after leaving at 16. If you want to do A levels 16-18 at a 6th form college. Usually 6th form at your school or at Derby college. You can either go to Derby University (or other cities) or go to work at 18. You can get a job sfter leaving school at 16. I go to Derby Moor Community School which is a public secondary school.

You can learn to drive and get a provisional (learning licence) when you are 17. And all the pubs (british public house meaning bar) and nightclubs (discos) are for 18 year olds. The laws of England are for all parts - there are rumours they want to make kissing, touching, etc illegal for under 16s.

Here are some Derby words and british slang:

Mardy - you get really upset, overreact, crybaby etc
Innit - people say this instead of isn't it
Jitty - this is an alley way
Minging - ugly or disgusting
Tramp - homeless, poor person
greb - what people call those who like rock music in my school
Arse - ass
crimbo - christmas
twat - is an insult

So you have a slight idea of what it is like for us people living in Derby but I hope you have seen these differences are nto important. We are not these posh movie London-like people but every city is different and we know that stereotyping does make it so easy to paint a false image in the mind.
