A sad story about a Dog

Now I didn't write this, but the forward I got it on said I could use it to inform the public. So as long as I don't say I wrote it.Actually, a man in some state, I forget where payed 7000 to have this essay put on the front page of the paper. Read it, it makes sense.
When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and playfulness. You called me your child. Whenever I chewed a slipper or had an accident you would wag your finger at me and say how could you. Even through those chewed slippers and accidents we became the best of friends. We loved each other.
Housebreaking took a little longer, but I helped you and we made it through. I remember late at night when I would lay by your side in bed and you would tell me your secret dreams, heartaches, and worries. I remember car rides, how I loved those rides. I remember long walks in the park and endless hours of fetch. We belonged together.
I remember sun baths and anxiously awaiting your return everyday. I remember you would come through the door and I woudl bound to you and lick your face as if to say " How was your day?".
But then she came along--your wife wasn't a dog person. Even as I tried to nuzzle her and be friends she only pushed me away. But I loved her because you loved her. Then the human babies came. They were so pink and tiny. I loved the smell of them and the way they smiled. But your wife locked me away in a kennel in fear that I might hurt them. Soon they grew and I fell in love with them. I loved the way they pulled theirselves up on my collar and kissed me on the nose. I loved their touch, because nowadays your touch was so infrequent.
Soon the day came when you came home with big news for your family. You had gotten a job oppurtunity and would be moving to an apartment that didn't allow dogs. You made the decision that was best for your family. I couldn't understand it, I was once the only family you had.
You took me on a car ride the next day. I enjoyed it, I hadn't been in one in so long. But then I smelled a smell of fear and hoplessness. You filled out the paperwork and avoided my eyes as you politely refused to take my collar and leash. You looked at the lady behind the desk and said "I know you will find her a good home" She smiled and explained how hard it was to find a middle aged dog a home, even one with "papers". You gave me a goodbye pat on the head as you pryed your son's fingers loose from my collar. As he screamed "no daddy, don't let them take my doggy" I worried for him, and wondered what kind of lessons you had just taught about friendship, love, loyalty, and trust.I gave you one last look and thought "how could you?"
They give us as much attention here as thier busy schedules allow. They feed us of course but i lost my appetite days ago. Every time someone would walk past my kennel i would bound to the door wagging my tail hoping it was you and that you had come back and this all a bad dream. but you never came. However, one day a nice soft spoken lady came and led me to a room, a blissfully quiet room. she placed me on a table and rubbed my ears and told me not to worry. then she placed a tourniquet around my forearm as a tear trickled down her cheek. Then she expertly slid a hypodermic needle into my vien. I felt the cool liquid coursing through my viens. I laid my head down sleepily and murmered how could you? As though she understood my dogspeak she hugged me and hurriedly explained it was her job to see that i go to a better place. i thumped my tail one last time as to say my how could you had not been directed at her but at you my master. how could you love me then leave me? i still love you of course but how could you? i will wait for you here forever. HOW COULD YOU?????
Now wasn't that sad? Each year over 65,000 dogs are put down in the U.S. Why can't people just spend a few dollars to have their pets spayed or neutered? A few dollards to save lives. Have your pets psayed or neutered. Help in the fight to stop the killing.
