Everyone has a story…here is mine…
When I was twelve years old I met someone who would later leave a profound impact on my life. I didn’t know it at the time but I sure do now. His name was David. He was six foot two with long black hair that just grazed his shoulders. His eyes were jet black. Anyone could have dismissed them as cold and unfeeling. They were the farthest from it in every way. They were warm, inviting, and sincere. They were the truest eyes I had ever seen. If the moonlight hit them just right you could see straight into his heart, mind, and soul. No one would have guessed he was only fourteen.
At first, he frightened me with his complex words and strange rhythmic phrases. I told myself that I should stay as far away from his as possible. Over the course of the summer, I gave way into the inevitable and I found myself purposely going out of my way just to bump into him for even the quickest of moments. Some nights we would sit out on our favorite bench at the playground behind our houses and talk for hours. We were completely oblivious to the fact that all of the little children playing night tag had retired for the night and that the sky was falling dark.
We spent more and more time together that summer. People would have thought were an item. In a certain sense of the word, we were. All Winter I would think about the Spring and Summer ahead. I would fantasize about the warm nights and sun showers. I would lay under my electric blanket and dream about the hot pavement and trips to the lake. Neither one of us actually talked about how we felt for one another. It seemed to be a mutual understanding between the both of us. Words didn’t need to be said to get our points across.
We had two wonderful summers together before April of 2002. David had just turned sixteen only three months prior in the early days of January. One April morning he became sick with the flu. I wasn’t aware but that would be the last rainy weekend I would see him treading over to the laundry mat to take his clothes from the dryer. That night David died of Meningitis. It had only taken nine hours to kill him. I received a telephone call the next afternoon telling me what had happened.
David was a unique individual. He taught me that looks come from the inside and most importantly, friendship, against all odds, last forever.
...hold your friends close...you never know...
