As a classical musician, I find it very difficult to classify much of what is on the radio, since so much of it is so repulsive. I'm fearful for today's children, since they must grow up listening to this.

Rap is not music. It literally defies the definition of Western music (which is: upon informance, the combination of melody, rhythm, and harmony in a pleasing arrangement). Rap lacks the most important aspect of music: melody. It has rhythm, more so than many other genres, but the quality of the harmony is poor. That being said is evidence enough that rap cannot be considered music. Granted, it is a form of art: there is, to some extent, a certain degree of talent necessary for performing rap, but that alone does not make it music.

To a classical musician, trained and educated in serious music for most of my life, it is an utter insult that rap enjoys the popularity that it has and that today's youth have such limited knowledge of what true music is. Like it or not, the classical tradition is the true music of today, and it is such a shame that it is so ignored.

Lastly, to prepare myself for the replies that will surely come, do not try to argue with me. I am a musician, not a layperson; I have, can, and will tell you facts that prove me right. If you would like to debate this, at least dignify us with a scholarly, educated response, not mere disagreement.

My advice, invest your money and your mind in true music and not rap.
