May 12, 1916, Northeastern France (The Battle of the Somme)

-I can still rememeber, not two years ago in York.  being another proud Englishmen ready to defend my queen from the hun.  As far as I know England is still there, but its a world apart from me and everyone here with me now.  Had I only known what I was about to face I would have never left.  It has been close to three months since I have seen a solid mile of grass, or even a deer.

-We spent all day today in the trench, not that I mind, at all, its far better than going over the top. Thought we will undoubtedly go over tonight. The artillery barrage has just begun, no doubt the germans know were coming now.

-Its quiet now, The sounds of the dying in no-man's land have finally stopped.  My battalion was destroyed in the last assault, of the 500 men that went across, including about 20 officers, Im the only officer left, with a little over fifty men left, all of whom are wounded one way or another. Theres no one left alive in second platoon, they were all killed, every single one. They walked right in front of a machine gun nest. My good friend Benjamin was cut in half by a mortar shell.

It was only fifty yards to the enemy trench, we didnt even take it, aside from my battalion, another thousand men died to cross a fifty yard field, It took 11 hours for the dying to fall silent. None of else could help them, its a damn shame.

-My new company consists mostly of green troops, newbies from england.  They were suprised when i told them there arent any extra ponchos left, they arent much a fan of sitting in mud either.

May 21, 1916, 12 miles east of the river Somme, France

-The rain started up again today, turning the endless field of dirt into mud holes at least 2 feet deep in some places. getting through the communication trenches was the worst, the mud became so thick I had to leave my boots behind. How much would I give just to see a quiet blue sky again.

June 1, 1916, first line trench, Somme river, France

-the horror of this place is unimaginable.  I dont bother making friends anymore, they always end up dead, sometimes I'm jelous.  I dont really think about avoiding the bullets or artillery anymore, not even the poison gas.  The cries of the dying are everywhere, all the time.  men, caught in mud have starved or frozen to death encased in mud, still standing mostly.  The trenches are no better, the dead are infested with lice, or bugs.  Some are being devoured by the rats, even the dying have become a meal to them. Alot of these rats are bigger than dogs, with the appetite of a wolf.  The've been nibbling at my feet too.

- The germans are hitting us hard now, the artillery is endless, and they're charges are as suicidal as ours, only they've taken our first and second line trench. The fighting actually was a releif, Ive grown tired of seeing my comrades being eaten from the inside out.  The smell of gunpowder overcame the smell of decay.

-This will be my last entry, Were going over the top and I have no intent of coming back.  Since 1914 Ive traveled a total of 45 miles, back and forth.  I wish I could see England again, the way the sun shines off of the channel in the early morning, or the sounds of the leaves rustling in the trees.  I will miss it.
