The way i see it is...
In ancient greek mythology there was gods and goddesses to explain all the things that the people couldn't at that time (seasons, storms, etc.). But eventually, science proved them wrong, no more gods, no more goddesses...but there were still many things that scientists hadn't figured out a reason for, such as how we got here, etc. It seemed as though "god" was an easy explanation to the puzzels we could not solve. (why is the sky blue? god made it that way. Why are we here? because god loved us and made us in his own image.) Alright fair enough right? Well, what about the theory of evolution? the new explanations of how we got here and why things are the way they are are much more concrete then "it was god's plan" But of course, everyone needs something to believe in which is why the theory of "god" still exists, many people were brought up as chirstians worshiping one thing or another, but what do those people do when they find out the real reason behind things? They can't just abandon their faith, the one thing they lived for, so they keep believeing...ignoring the scientific evidence. Religion Explained the things that science couldn't....until it did
Personally, i think one reason why people believe in god so much is to avoid chaos, religious people try to be good "sheep" of their father, so in turn they obey the 10 commandments (or try to) and lead healthy christian lives...they have to follow those rules for fear they won't have a great afterlife, but without religion they lose the will to "do whats right"
Religion isn't a bad thing, it keeps the peace and gives people something to believe in...but for me, when i die the only place i can be sure of that i go to, is in the ground.
