1I used to have an ODC and what I learned from it...

I came across an article in a magazine about 3 weeks ago. Yes it was just another one of those real life stories with the most bizarre problems that you read and make yourself feel glad you're not like them. Only I saw the title "I can't stop pulling my hair out" and that's when it all came flooding back to me.
You see I used to do it when I was about 9 or 10 years old and I wasn't actually concious of what I was actually doing to myself. I used to tear out huge clumps from the front and it eventually lead me to have bald patches. I was so upset and my parents kept taking me to the doctor and even they couldn't tell me what was up with me. I did tell my mother it was my fault I was pulling it out but she thought that it fell out by scratching or blamed it on my head band that I wore.
That was when my mother stopped me from wearing my head band and so I couldn't cover the bald patches up. I was stared at, bullied and people just thought I was a freak. I wanted to know why I couldnt stop pulling my hair out.
What was even more confusing was it grew back and I stopped doing it to myself and I felt so much happier. I have a full head of hair and I dont want to give myself bald patches ever again.
Only the girl in the article tore her whole head of hair out and it made me realise that all the stress, upset and damage I caused through my hair pulling phase it was 10 times worse for her.
I can't remember the name of the condition but it begins with a "T". It can vary for different people but mostly affects girls at the beginning of puberty. I luckily grew out of it like most people but its an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and can affect people for the whole of their lives.
I just wanted to let people know it can be a form of self harming and I advise people to face up to what they are doing so you can get help. There is no way of stopping, only you can and it's so easy to do it again and again even if you're aiming to stop. I feel so much better being able to share my story and if you are someone who is in my situation or know someone then I hope you can learn from this too.
