Chapter one
"just the beginning"
I had enjoyed school since the start of first year. The very first day of first year, I had known I would like High School. And I had been right. Because I had enjoyed first year. And second year. But my troubles, worrys and annoying times started in third year.
I walked into the playground, after the summer holidays, tanned and bright and ready to start a fresh new year. Ready, same as always.
I had seen my two best friends - Lisa and Paula, throughout the summer holidays. First two weeks in summer we spent together- going swimming, going to the cinema, going ice-skating, hanging out at the park, round each others houses.........then I went on holiday for two weeks and by the time I got back it was August and I couldn't get a hold of them. But Paula's birthday was on the last week of the summer holidays. So on that day I rang her doorbell with her present. She had sent me an invatation while I had been on holiday - posted it through my letterbox. It had said:
Dear Yvonne,
Its my birthay (as you probably know) on the
17th August. I'm having a birthday party for
you and Lisa in my house on that day. A sleepover
will be in my house that night as well. Please come
to my door at around 1.00 that day ready with your
sleepover things. See you then,
Love Paula xxxxxx
So I had Paula's present (a bath set, chocolates and a necklace) tucked under my arm, my sleepover kit and sleeping bag in the other, at excatly 1.00 that day. No-one answered. I couldnt get a hold of Paula or Lisa that day, nor for the rest of the holidays.
Thats why, that day, walking across the playground ready for the new school year, I was also dying to see my friends, and apologize for not making Paula's birthday, even though I did turn up at the right time
I scanned the playground and they were nowhere to be seen. I went inside, and found them leaning against a vending machine.
"Hiya" I sprang up to them.
They looked at me as if they didnt know me. Then finally Lisa spoke:
"Hey. What's wrong with you?" She asked.
"What do you mean what's wrong with me?" I asked, looking from Lisa to Paula, back to Lisa again. None of their faces showed any expression.
"You don't bother to even speak to us during the summer, then you dont even turn up at Paula's birthday, then come bouncing in here expecting to be friends with us?" Lisa asks, growling.
"What? We are still friends Aren't we?" I ask, panicing.
They both laugh.
"Friends? More like enemy's" Laughs Paula.
"Why? Because I did turn up at your birthday" I stare at Paula, wondering what was going on. Was this a trick or joke they were playing on me?
"You did NOT" Screams Lisa in my face. I was beginning to get annoyed now. I was at Paula's birthday Well, I tried but she wasnt in
"Well you never turned up at my door." Sneered Paula. "Where did you think the party was?"
"Your house. I did turn up. I rang and rang the doorbell and nobody answered. That wasn't my fault." I sneered right back.
"Well nobody turned up at my door at 1.00 on the 18th of August" Said Paula, getting red in the face.
I was getting more and more angry. "I did turn up-....wait a minute. The 18th?" I asked.
"Yeah." Sighed Paula, smiling.
"But your invatation said the 17th." I complained.
"Well I changed the date....." Said Paula.
"You could have let me know"
"I couldnt get a hold of you. Lisa tried you as well. None of us could......." Sighed Paula.
I knew this was a lie because when I came back from my holiday in August I did nothing but sit in the house, bored. My mobile was switched on, so was the house. I mean, they were my only friends so I hadnt been out with anybody else.
Lisa must have knew I was thinking about this and she quickly changed the subject:
"Did you get Paula a present?" She asked.
"Of course." I said. paula smiled.
"Give me it then" She said. I thought this was a bit rude.
"Well I dont have it with me. Its in the house...." I said slowly.
"What? You never even thought of bringing it to school for Paula?" Asked Lisa, sneering again.
"Not really.....I'll bring it tommorow." I said quickly. I still wanted to be their friend, since I had nobody else, even if they were bring quite rude to me.
"Tommorow isnt good enough." growled Paula. "Your meant to be my friend."
"I am" I said, growing impatient.
"Well you arent showing it very much."
My throat was getting dry. I couldnt think of what to say. It was hard facing these two girls who were meant to be my "friends".
"I need a drink. My throat hurts." I moaned. The vending machine they were leaning against had juice in it.
"Can u move out the way please?" I asked.
"Make us ." Lisa said.
"Oh my god. I only want a drink" I said.
"Tough. You'll have to suffer like everybody else." Said Paula.
"Like everybody else ?" I asked.
"Anyone who wants a drink." Said Lisa.
Right on cue, a boy from 2nd year came past us and tried to squeeze buy Lisa and Paula to get a drink from the machine, like I wanted to do.
"Excuse me..." He mumbled.
"No, sorry. This vending machine is out of order." Said Lisa, smiling.
"Is it? Well it would have a sign on it if it was." Said the boy, boldly.
"Well the headteacher hasnt put it up yet. Its only the first day of term They havent had time to put it up yet" Says Lisa, putting on a fake act. The boy looks at her.
"Dont be stupid. Move out the way." He says, scowling.
"I'm not stupid. And your not getting into the machine anyway for being cheeky." Says Lisa.
"So it is working?" Asks the boy.
"No"
"yeah it is. And i want a flipping drink, stop being ridiculos and pathetic. the girls in my year are more mature than you , and you're "meant" to be older" he says laughing. And he puts his coins in and takes his drink, as quick as a wink. Lisa and Paula looked shocked as he runs away.
"We ARE older" Shouts Lisa as he runs away.
There is a silence.
"Well can I get my drink now?" I asked. They both burst out lauhging. I dont see anything to laugh about.
"Let me get my drink. I'm your friend" I say.
"No." Says Lisa.
I give up on them and walk away down the corridors to the other vending machine and get my drink.
They are not worth it, if they're being rude like that It would never be me and Paula against Lisa, or me and Lisa against Paula. It's not fair.
I remember something my mum had said to me, when she was talking about when she was at school and these 4 girls who were "meant to be her friends" were bullying her. She had said:
"Well, it'd rather be alone and be by myself than have friends who annoy you."
This was the exact same position I was in Though even though Mum had 4 girls agaisnt her. I only had two.
So I went , got my drink, and waited by myself till the bell rang.
When the bell did ring, I made my way up the stairs to my registration class.
"Morning, Yvonne." My teacher, Mrs. Unfro, says to me as I walk through the classroom door. I smile back.
I take a seat in the corner, as we havent been issued seats yet, and hope that nobody sits next to me.
I watch everyone come into the classroom one after another. Then I see Lisa and Paula come in, giggling and laughing and sniggering and staring. At me.
I see Lisa whispering something in Paulas ear.
They make their way over and plonk themselves on two seats behind me. I turn right round to face the front so my back is facing them. I can't stand looking at them. Paula is sitting right behind me and she starts annoying me by playing with my hair.
"Stop it." I say, turning round, to see them both laughing.
"Nope." Shrugged Paula. Lisa cracks up laughing again.
I shake my head at them, as if to say "fine then, you just be immature" and turn back round.
Paula continues to play with my hair, until everyone in our class is seated, the teacher closes the door and comes to her desk at the front.
"Good morning, everyone. Settle down and be quiet. Now, welcome to a fresh new year. I hope all of you are ready to settle down to work hard and looking forward to homework." Smiles Mrs. Unfro. Everyone groans.
"Glad to see you're all so enthusiastic. " Says Mrs. Unfro, sarcastically.
She pauses to sort out something on her desk. Everyone (excpet me) sees this as a cue to talk, so they all start chatting and laughing.
"That was not an order to talk Shhhh Now" Shouts Mrs. Unfro. "Now, about the seating plan this year.........."
Everyone groans again, and shouts echo one another as the boys (and some of the girls. The brave ones) start shouting at the teacher:
"Aw no miss"
"Come on miss, can't we stay where we are?"
"Aw miss let us stay seated"
"We wanna sit with our friends"
"Please If we're happy we'll work harder"
"Aw miss please"
"No." Mrs. Unfro says firmly. Everyone shuts up. "I am making a seating plan as we speak. Everyone, gather your bags and coats and whatever else and come and stand at the front of the classroom."
We all do as we're told. Paula and Lisa barge past me and nearly send me flying into a desk. Unfortunately, Mrs. Unfro didn't see that.
She goes through the register, seating everyone alphabetically. Paula's second name is Fraser, so she gets a seat at the window, as do all the people at the beginning of the register. Mine and Lisa's second name is close. Mine is Yvonne McGraw and hers is Lisa McLover.
I get seated right at the back, much to my delight. Not that I can talk to anyone since I don't have anyone to talk to. Lisa is sitting right in front of me. If I had the guts, I would play with her hair just like Paula had been doing to me, just to annoy her. But of course, I didnt.
"Okay. Now that everyone is seated, let's sort out other extra things. Such as ..........classmating." Says Mrs. Unfro.
Everyone stares at each other in puzzlement.
A few horny people laugh.
"Are we going to have sex with each other?" Says one of the popular boys, trying to be funny. Most people laugh, only me and Mrs. Unfro are the people that don't even smile.
"No, we aren't David." Says Mrs. Unfro.
"Awww." David moans. This time, only his friends laugh.
Mrs. Unfro tells us all to be quiet, and listen carefully:
"Classmating is a thing I came up with during the holidays. It is - "
She got interuppted by David again. "Oh so you came up with it by yourself? You made it up?"
"yes I did David."
"Oh. Then it's bound to be-" began David,
"i dont think anyone wants to know what its bound to be , David. Just be quiet or I'm sending you out the class."
David went silent.
"thank you. Now, classmating. I made it up by myself, yes. It's where we get together every week and discuss how we are getting on with our classmates. Everyone will get to hear who is becoming friends, and also, who is becoming enemies." Smiled Mrs. Unfro.
Paula and Lisa looked at each other. I looked at my desk.
"i think thats a stupid idea, Miss." Said Paula.
"Me too Miss. I mean, everyone will tell lies." Said Lisa.
"I can assure you it's not a stupid idea, Paula and Lisa. I did it with my last third year. They all enjoyed it and found it amusing. Tell you what. Let's start it today. At afternoon registration."
Everyone made groaning sounds, especially Lisa and Paula. I knew why they didnt want to do it Cos they would have to say they were enemies with me
After registration, it was Maths. I was not in Paula or Lisa's class. I thanked God for that on my way down the corridor
I had a man called Mr. Soft for Maths. Mr. Soft Everyone said his name suited him. Not his skin, but his personallity, it was because he was shy, and quiet and quite timid. The boys all loved it because they could clown around and do what they liked because Mr. Soft wasnt the least bit strict
We were (surprise, surprise) allowed to sit where we wanted in Mr. Softs class.
"Yes, as long as you dont talk." Said Mr. Soft, trying to be strict. We talked all the same though. Well, everyone except me did.
I sat at the back in a corner and nobody sat near me thank goodness.
In fact, during that period , hardly anyone did any work. Because Mr. Soft didnt have a seating plan we didnt waste any time sorting everyone into seats, so he just took the register and put some sums on the board for us.
I was the only one who finished them all, and got two lots of extra sums.
All of the boys never started it, and just sat there talking. they didnt even write their name on their jotters Half the girls only did 1 or two sums, the rest didnt start either. But everyone was talking. the only time I talked was to ask Mr. Soft for help for one of the sums.
Next, was computing. We had a really nice teacher, with a weird long name that i cant remember. She said throughout the year we would be working hard, but because it was the first day of term we could have a free period so i went on the internet and enjoyed going on lots of cool sites.
At break, this was my real problem. As I was going down the stairs to go into the playground, I saw Lisa and Paula waiting at the bottom.
"Hiya Yvonne. Enjoying school?" Asks Lisa.
I wonder what they're up to. "Yup. It's great."
"Cool. So what subjects did you have after registration?" Asks Paula.
"Maths and computing. Why?"
"Just asking. We had maths too. I think everyone has Maths and English at the same time. I had Art after that. Paula had Home Ec." Said Lisa.
"Ok" I said.
"Art was yucky. You got paint all over your hands, look." Lisa stuck her hands out to show them spodged with blue and green paint. "And my teacher smelled of BO and his breath was even worse. Coffee mixed with garlic bread" laughed Lisa.
Paula giggled.
"But Home Ec. was good. My teacher was nice and smelled of lavender. Tommorow she said we're baking cakes." Said Paula.
I wondered why they were acting all nice as if they were my friends again.
"So how was computing?" Asked Lisa.
"Fine." I replied.
"What did youz do?" Asked Paula.
"Nothing."
I began to walk away again. I wasnt going to let them rule my life like this. Deciding when they wanted to be friends, and when they didnt.
"Where are you going?" Lisa called.
"Away. By myself." I said proudly. Even thought it wasnt really anything to be proud of.
"Why? Come back and talk to us" Said Paula.
Then it struck me. I thought back to registration this morning. Mrs. Unfro's words echoed in my mind: ' Everyone will get to hear who is becoming friends, and also, who is becoming enemies ' . This was what it was all about Mrs. Unfro's classmating thing So that they could show to everyone they had no enemies. They knew everybody else liked them (and it was true. everyone did like Lisa and Paula), so that wasnt a problem. I was the problem I was the only one in Mrs. Unfro's class that didnt like them So they had to get me to like them again But oh no, that wasnt happening. Cos after Mrs. Unfro's classmating sessions (if I knew better) they would be back to being nasty and horrible to me I wasnt letting them string me along like that Oh no
"What? You treat me like dirt this morning, then try and talk to me as normal at breaktime?" I say, growling at them.
"No. We didnt treat you like dirt-" Began Paula.
"-and even if we were you deserved it" Interuppted Lisa.
"-Lisa No, we werent treating you like dirt, Yvonne. I was angry because of something else. something personal." said Paula, putting on a sad face and puppy-dog eyes. But I wasnt going to fall for them
"Something that was worth hurting one of your friends?" I asked.
"yes." replied Paula, keeping the sad face on.
"Why werent you nasty to Lisa?" iasked. Paula paused. Everything went silent and they looked at each other. "not got an answer then?"
Lisa looked embarrassed, as if their was no answer.
But Paula then smiled. She did then.
"Thats because Lisa knows about my problem. You dont."
"Why not?"
"Well I dont know. You werent really close. But now, can we be friends? I apologize for being nasty earlier, and so does Lisa." Says Paula. Lisa looks as if she isnt sorry one bit.
"And now, if we become friends, I'll tell you."
This did seem a likely option. That way, I wouldnt have to worry about Lisa and paula. they were my friends, and i could enjoy school just as id hoped.
but what if this was all a lie just for Mrs. Unfro's thing?
But the look on Paulas face looked serious. Maybe there was something serious going on. So if she told me, maybe that would convicnce me more.
"Okay, we're friends again." I said.
Paula tried to make her smile looked grateful, but it just looked sneaky. Lisa's grin was evil.
"So whats your problem?" I asked.
They pulled me into a corner, behind the stairs where nobody could see us.
"Why are we hiding?" I asked.
They laughed.
"We're not hiding." Explained Paula. "We're out of the way of everyone. So nobody can hear us"
"Oh, right. Okay." I say.
"Now, you must promise not to tell anyone before Paula tells you." Says Lisa, pushing me into a wall.
"Lisa Dont hurt her, for goodness sake" Says Paula.
"I'm not hurting her. I'm just making sure she understands. Because if she tells anyone then we'll fall out with her forever and we'll make your life hell ." Said Lisa, her head right agaisnt mine so i could smell her minty breath.
"I get the message. " I say, pushing her away. " I wont tell anyone."
