Okay, maybe this will make some people see the light. I have a PhD in English, so perhaps that will add to my arguments. "I am" is the shortest sentence in the English language. "Go" is indeed a 'grammatically correct' phrase (ie 'command'), but must be construed thus, and not as a full sentence. The dictionary states that a sentence contains a subject and predicate. However, a sentence can also be a subject and its simple verb (which is like predicate, but without uneccessary additions). Therefore, "Go" is just a command, not a sentence. It's IMPLIED, but not STATED, that the subject is "you." In order for it to be perfectly grammatical in nature and thus correct, it must have the "you" included. "I do" is almost a viable contender for the shortest sentence; I don't quite know what to think on this. I personally would go with "I am" simple because it's not only (one of) the shortest, but the simplest and most complete in nature - as contrasted with "I do," which strictly requires an additional verb to make it a sentence. "Do" is not the verb, it's a shortened version of the verb/predicate (in this case, they MUST be together to be counted as a verb at all) "do take" (eg, "I do take this woman to be my lawfully wedded wife."). Here's another example: "Do you want tomatoes?" - "I do want [them]." We cut off "want" because the speaker and recipient know that "do" refers to wanting tomatoes. "I do" is certainly closer than "Go;" "I am" still takes the prize.
