The story of Brandon

My name is Joy.  I live in a really little town in Montana.  On September 11th, 2001, the World Trade Center was attacked.  It hurt me, but nothing could have hurt worse than what happened exactly a week after that on September 18.

As I mentioned, I live in a very small town.  My junior class contains only 15-18 students.  We are all close.  Everybody knows everybody elses name and we've all dated each other once or twice.  Its fair to say that we love eachother.

One particular student in my class was named Brandon.  Brandon has been with our class since the 8th grade. Before that he went to school in a nearby town even smaller than the one I live in.  So he has always been in our lives even before he went to school with us. He was a little over 6 ft. tall, had dark brown hair, and had the hugest smile that anyone has ever seen.  Perhaps he wasn't an angel, but he was a good kid.  He liked to drink a few beers every now and then, but he was also the most caring guy i've known.  He was always giving out huge bear hugs and before he would leave he would always say "love ya, bye".

On September 18th Brandon shot himself in the head.  I remember sitting on the couch doing my homework when my mom got the call.  I didn't beleive it, it didn't sink in & it couldn't be real.  The same guy that I joked with at school that day was gone and I would never see him again.  I went to bed that night in a state of confusion.  I've never lost anyone that I knew that well, they've always been 80 yr. old ladies or relatives I never really knew.  Its never been my friend.

For the first time, I wondered about dying.  I wondered if he could look down and see us crying.  I wondered if his ghost would be with me. Its all so scary and confusing and theres no answers.

The next day at school everyone was crying.  All over the school students were sitting on the floor in front of their lockers with tear stained faces.  The only sound was tears & sobs of the 90 students in my high school.  They told us we could leave class & go talk to the counseler, but none of us did.  We live in Montana, we're not like that.  We hold our feelings in.  Stuff like suicide isn't supposed to happen to us.  Its always supposed to be the kid that nobody cares about.  Thats what I used to think.

I don't know if anyone cares about this story.  It made an impact on our entire town though.  Nobody knows why he did it.  Everyone thought he was happy with life.  If anything, he has taught us to love everyone everyday. I wish that we wouldn't have had to pay such a high price to realize that.

I wish that I didn't have to go to my 17 yr. old friends funeral, I wish I didn't have to see his empty desk in every classroom, I wish that his little sister wasn't depressed, i wish that i could see him graduate with me,

but most of all i wish that this would make an impression on your life if you are reading this.  Don't let it wait until you lose someone close to you,

just promise me that you'll love everyone today and not let a moment pass without showing someone that you care about them

do it for Brandon
