The reason I decided to add this forward is beacuse a question came up the other
day "Is cheerleading REALLY a sport" I'll try to answer yout this way.
The defenition of sport:
NOUN
1. a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. b. A particular form of this activity. 2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively. 3. An active pastime; recreation.
Cheerleading is definately a sport. It is a physical activity and there are so many rules that you wouldnt even believe. Some rules may be as stupid as our hair must not touch our collar or points will be deducted in competion. Yes, that is a very stupid rule, but we still have to obey it and many other rules. Cheerleading is not just a pastime, it is a way of life for those who do it. We have to give up many other things just to be on the squad. Thats some of the reason why we cant do other sports. I still play on two travel soccer teams and I run track, but because of cheerleading, I cant play basketball or volleyball. I also have less time to be with friends on the weekends because we have practice for over 5 hours. We even have practices on Sundays, even though it is against the school rules, we still practice. If you dont know about cheerleading, dont make judgements about it. we arent just out there to run around in short skirts and yell. Cheerleading goes beyond a sport, cheerleading is pushing yourself over you
physical ability and sometimes even mental. Cheerleaders go beyond the
"rivarly" between their schools. Football/basketball players go to intemedate,
beat the other team; cheerleaders go to make life-long friends. Football &
basketball players go to camp...well guess what...we do too!! We go to camp,
wake up at 5:30 in the mornin, and cheer till 10:00 that night. We get yelled
at, pushed to out phsyical limit out in the sun & heat, we get dropped, kicked,
dropped ON...but as all good squads say "No flyer hits the ground" even if that
means everyone is underneath her. All in the price of cheerleading.
Even though we might not feel like going out in front of hundreds of people
that Friday to cheer for you football players; we suck it up...putting a smile
on our face none-the-less. Our coaches have drilled "Hands on hips, smiles on
lips" untill we want to scream. We've always heard time & time again "Even if
your boyfriend called you the ugliest dog on earth...suck it up...smile...NO
SWEAT...ur a CHEERLEADER" Sometimes our team doesn't win...you may be loosing 50
to nothin. But we still hafta act like yall are winnin 100 to nothin. And lemme
tell ya, that does get a little hard after a while. But in our eyes, yall are
the best team EVER...and we make sure everyone else thonks you are too. Who do
yall think organized the pep-rally's to get yall outta class & get the team
pumped ^...who do U think painted the signs that are in our halls & in ur locker
rooms...the one U run threw. GUESS WHAT...it was the cheerleaders...NOT the
football managers...but the CHEERLEADERS. You can say cheerleading isn't a sport cuz you don't compete. Watch ESPN...you'll see ALOT of cheerleading competitions. I thought 'Bring IT On' prooved that...maybe
I was wrong. So whatever STUPID thought you have about cheerleaders in your
head...get it out. We're not 'Air-Heads' that like parading around in a short
lil skirt (they're actually quite uncomfortable) We aren't whimps (we DO lift
weights) I'd like to see 1 guy @ one of OUR practices...to see how long he
lasts. I hope I've made myself VERY clear to all the guys that juss think we
were put on the field "For their eyes" and the girls that think we're "stupid
preps" and for the basketball players that think "the only reason we're
cheerleaders is cuz we couldn't dribble a ball if our life depended on it" Yall
probably couldn't hold up a press and throw a cradle or even throw a basket toss and get the flyer over 20 ft. in the air if your life depended on
it. (and that's easy stunts) Once again...I hope I made myslef clear. I LOVE
YALL...all the cheerleaders that read this...yall know it's ALL!
