A bank manager learns that lesson while in the final stages of
hiring a cashier. After reading all the applications, he brings
in two young men for interviews.
The first one is from a small college in upstate New York. He is
a nice young fellow, the manager thinks, but a bit timid.
Then he calls for the second man: "Jim Johnson!" Up steps a
burley young man who seems quite sure of himself.
"He looks like he can take care of any situation," thinks the
manager, and decides there and then to hire him.
He turns to the first applicant and tells him he can go.
To Johnson, he says, "Now, Jim, I like the way you carry
yourself. That's an important asset for a cashier. However, you
must be precise. I noticed you did not fill out the place on the
application where we asked for your formal education."
Jim looks a little confused.
"Where did you get your education?" the manager asks.
"Oh," Jim says. "Yale."
"That's very good, excellent. You're hired. And now that you're
working for us, what do you prefer to be called?"
"It's all the same to me," he says. "Either Yim or Mr. Yonson."
