4 anti-abortionists: why I am pro-choice
Rating: PG-13
Quality: (Quality: Unrated)
1) It's not that I don't believe life is sacred, but I do believe in quality of life as well. If I was made pregnant under circumstances where I could not possibly afford to bring up a child in good quality of life, I would probably abort. At the very least, I would prefer to have the choice.
2) Abortion is NOT murder. The foetus is totally dependent on the woman's body. Perhaps you were not aware that some animals are able naturally to abort their babies if there is little chance that they will have a decent life. So why do humans have to undergo pregnancies under the same circumstances?
3) I have a friend who was given up for adoption. I am certainly grateful for her friendship, but she herself suffers emotional and psychological problems mainly due to her having been adopted. She is very often depressed and confused about who she really is. Now of course I would rather have her alive than dead, but would you want to put a child through that kind of suffering?
4) There are many possible theories about the soul. I myself believe in reincarnation, but we can't be certain. So any prospective geniuses who happen to be aborted may come back or may not. But, until we know for sure, PLEASE stop being so judgemental and blaming towards women who choose abortion. It's difficult enough for them as it is. As a pro-choice person I don't necessarily believe that abortion is always the right option, but I don't believe it's always wrong either. It's up to the woman to make the choice. At least if it's legal she can make as informed a choice as possible, and have the support she needs to help her through her decision. No-one has any right to tell a woman in this situation what to do.
5) Following on from this, if you really want to stop abortions, then join a campaign to publicise contraception. Studies have shown that where the population are aware of the various forms of contraception, unwanted pregnancies drop sharply. If you really care about the feelings of the unborn, the best thing you can do is prevent the pregnancy from occurring in the first place. You can't blame women for not knowing about contraception.
6) Try to look at the situation in context. This is an unfair world. A lot of people live below the poverty line. We are expected to take on family and health costs by ourselves and not given nearly enough of the support we need. Under these circumstances, it's not surprising some women decide to abort. If you want to stop abortion, make the world a better place for women to bring up their children, particularly if the children are in some way disadvantaged. The Bush administration is anti-abortion, yet it is also against contraception, and wants to privatise Medicaid and get rid of benefits. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Before you judge women who go to the abortion clinic, think very carefully. You could just call women murderers and yell at them as they make an important and difficult decision, or you could try to understand why they're doing it and how they feel. I don't claim to know how it feels to go through an abortion, but then I wouldn't automatically condemn anyone who did. Thank you for reading.
